After Olympia

Artist: Anthony Caro (1924-2013)
Creation date: 1985
Installation date: 1986
Techniques: Patinated and varnished steel

Anthony Caro created this monumental work in 1985 following a trip to Greece. He took his inspiration from the pediment of the Temple of Zeus in Olympia, respecting its triangular composition and simple forms. The sculpture is made of varnished rusted steel and measures 23 meters in length.

From June 16, 2006 to February 18, 2007, Epad loaned the work to the Rodin Museum for display in the courtyard of the Hôtel Biron. On its return to La Défense, work on the Cnit prevented it from being reinstalled. It was not until May 2010 that the work was returned to its original position behind the Cnit.

As part of the restoration work, and to avoid the Trinity Tower construction site, this original location was temporarily changed in August 2014 to one opposite the EDF Tower. The work then moved to its definitive location, on the Parvis de La Défense, on Sunday February 7, 2016.

A word about the artist

Considered around the world as one of the masters of abstract sculpture, Caro nevertheless started out using traditional bronze modeling and casting methods until the 1960s. Born in England in 1924, a trip to the U.S. turned his attention definitively to the assembly of industrial and metal beams, as well as other materials such as silver, wood and paper, for creations that would become purely abstract.
