Artist: Emile Aillaud (1902-1988)
Installation date: 1985
Techniques: Granite, marble
The work is located at the exit of the bus station, in an area known as Mastaba.
The benches were originally intended to form part of an architectural ensemble included in Émile Aillaud's Tête Défense project. Spreckelsen's Grande Arche replaced the project, however, and only these few elements remain.
A word about the artist
Émile Aillaud, a French architect born in Mexico City on January 18, 1902, studied architecture and fine arts, culminating in the creation of the Pavillon d'Elegance at the 1937 Exposition Universelle. The post-war period and the enormous need for social housing gave him the opportunity to distinguish himself as one of the leading exponents of the new architecture.
With a predilection for rounded lines and a broad palette of colors, he introduced a poetic dimension to the production of large-scale housing projects. He died in 1988 at the age of 86, and will be remembered as one of the last great architects of the 20th century, on a par with Le Corbusier.
