La Fontaine des Corolles

La Fontaine des Corolles
Artist: Louis Leygue (1905-1992)
Installation date: 1973
Techniques: Copper alloy, paint
Louis Leygue described poetry as "taking advantage of the opportunity you are given to express something". This principle, applied to art, led him to imagine this copper work, composed of superimposed cups from which water cascades to end its course in a square basin. It inspired the name of the "Place des Corolles", where it is installed.
A word about the artist
Born in 1905, Louis Leygue took an early interest in Rodin and Romanesque art, before discovering Baroque art during his travels in Italy. As a student at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he learned the special technique of large-scale sculpture. Open-minded and curious, he sought to reconcile modernity and tradition, creating most of his work in his studio. Collaborating with the great architects of his time, he became the first to integrate sculpture "into architecture".
