The Grand Paris Express project involves building 200 km of automated metro lines by 2031 to connect the Greater Paris area.

A titanic project: the Grand Paris Express network

Four new metro lines will be created around the capital (15, 16, 17, 18) and line 14 will be extended south and north to connect Saint-Denis to Orly Airport. The Grand Paris Express is a major project that is social (opening up cities), urban (supporting and driving numerous development projects around stations), environmental (providing an alternative to cars), and economic (creating around 115,000 jobs).

It is managed by the Société des Grands Projets, an organization created in 2010 with the mission of designing and building the new metro. Work on the first lines began in 2015. The lines will be gradually brought into service until 2031.

Focus on Line 15 West

By decree of the Council of State on November 21, 2016 (Decree No. 2016-1566), Line 15 West was declared a public utility. Line 15 West will connect 11 stations from Saint-Denis Pleyel to Pont de Sèvres in 25 minutes. Line 15 will form a 75 km ring road around Paris and will serve 45 towns in the Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, Seine-et-Marne, and Val-de-Marne departments. Thanks to this line, 1.5 million passengers will have daily access to the region's major facilities and business parks.

It will also help strengthen the economic hub of western Île-de-France. La Défense, the world's fourth largest business district, will benefit from more direct connections to other strategic areas of Greater Paris (such as Saint-Denis Pleyel and the Roissy and Le Bourget airports). Line 15 West is scheduled for completion by 2030.

Benefits for travelers

  • By 2031, Line 15 West will offer optimized connections with Transilien lines L and U, Metro line 1, RER lines A and E, trams, and surrounding bus lines.
  • La Défense will be 13 minutes from Saint-Denis Pleyel (compared to 26 minutes today)!

Line 15 West in figures

  • 12 municipalities involved, including 2 departments
  • 9 new stations, including 8 with connections
  • 22.4 km of track
  • Commissioning at the end of 2031 for the Pont de Sèvres-La Défense section
  • Recognized as a public utility since 2016

A new train station in Puteaux

The future station for line 15 of the Grand Paris Express will be located in the heart of the Rose de Cherbourg district, close to the economic and urban hub of La Défense. Its location, in a densely populated area undergoing major redevelopment, presents a real technical challenge in terms of construction. The underground section will be located beneath the N1013 road, at the foot of the Voltaire Tower and close to the Westfield Les 4 Temps shopping center. It will be connected to the existing transport hub. The platforms of the future metro will be connected via two transfer corridors to the interchange located under the La Défense esplanade and directly to the RER A platforms.

The station entrance, on Place Louise Bourgeois, will be accessible by pedestrian and cycle paths. With large windows allowing plenty of natural light, the station's architecture will form a transition between the town of Puteaux and the business district.

Schedule of works at La Défense station

  • Summer 2023: Start of work to reroute telecommunications networks by Orange
  • July 2023: Appointment of the IntenCités15 consortium for the Saint-Cloud, Rueil – Suresnes Mont-Valérien, Nanterre La Boule, Nanterre La Folie, and La Défense stations
  • December 2023 to end of 2025: Relocation of underground networks
  • End of 2025/beginning of 2026: start of station construction work (civil engineering)
  • 2031: commissioning of the western section of line 15

To allow road and pedestrian traffic to continue during the various phases of construction, changes to the road layout are being and will be implemented.

For information: on July 13, 2023, the Société des Grands Projets notified the IntenCités15 consortium, led by Vinci Construction Grands Projets. This is the first Grand Paris Express contract awarded under this type of contract, which allows the Société des Grands Projets to entrust the design (studies) and construction (execution of works) of a project to a single consortium of operators.
