Landscape architect: Agence Ter
Programming: creation of a 700-meter-long green corridor (i.e. 11,200 m²)
Manager: City of Nanterre
Delivery: phase 1 in 2024
Location: Groues district (Nanterre)
A 700-meter-long tree-lined promenade running alongside the railway tracks with views of La Défense, the Jardin des Bels Ebats will welcome pedestrians and cyclists in a wooded, green setting.
The Jardin des Bels Ebats, formerly known as Le Balcon, is designed to be a continuation of the Jardin des Rails promenade (same flooring, common species), becoming increasingly wooded and vegetated as it approaches the Jardin de la Gare. Steps will provide seating along the entire length of the promenade.
The upper section is organized around three areas:
- A walking area for soft mobility and uses related to future real estate developments.
- An area of planted zones, alternating strips and tree-lined alcoves.
- A seating area with steps: the stepped edge invites visitors to take a break between two rows of plants.
The trees form rows (hazel, maple, cherry). The vegetation is used to break the wind and create shade.
An ecological corridor
The lower part of the Jardin des Bels Ebats des Groues is not open to the public. It is designed to be a biodiversity area, an ecological corridor along the railway line.
This section features a vegetated swale that collects rainwater from the public space, and a gabion wall (dry stone structure) that provides a habitat for species such as wall lizards, wagtails, chickadees, sparrows, pipistrelles, and odonates. Numerous birdhouses will be installed, and the wall will be covered with vegetation.
Key figures
- Height of the upper wall varies between 4.30 meters and 6.10 meters,
- 6 sections built by Paris La Défense, 3 sections built by third-party project owners (Eole, SGP, Telamon, and Bricqueville),
- High wall parallel to the low wall with a constant width of 3.9 meters,
- The width of the high promenade varies between 7 and 12 meters (excluding steps and low promenade).
Did you know?
The name of this public space was chosen in memory of the former Rue des Bels Ebats.
Jardin des Bels Ebats is a former locality in Les Groues that gave its name to a street in the neighborhood in 1910.
Rue des Bels Ebats led to the wolf quarry located in the Folie sector. At that time, Rue des Bels Ebats was lined with dozens of houses along a very lively and bustling street. The origin of its name comes from the locality “Les Bels Ebats,” which means “place where one can frolic.” This street was renamed Rue Edouard Colonne by the city council in 1934.
