Jardin des Rails

Jardin des Rails
Project owner/project manager: Paris La Défense/IN SITU – MAGEO – LEA – SOL PAYSAGE – C&E – TRANS FAIRE - ZOOM
Landscape architect: In Situ
Surface area: 12,500 m², creation of a new park continuing the green belt surrounding the ZAC des Groues development
Manager: City of Nanterre
Completion: 2025
Location: Groues district (Nanterre)
The heart of the Jardin des Rails, located in the Groues district, is organized around a wide curved path that follows the route of the old railway tracks. To the north, a densely planted 6-meter-wide hedgerow ensures distance from the real estate lots while providing a welcoming environment for wildlife. The southern part offers spaces designed to meet the needs of residents.
The project includes a structured playground for the entire Groues neighborhood, connected to the school complex. Wooden play equipment is positioned in the shade of a grove of evergreen trees. A large slide tower is the centerpiece of the playground. Large tables and seating areas are located near the playground to ensure the comfort of parents and caregivers.
The Fruit Tree Meadow
The first sequence is particularly simple in its treatment: a large meadow with lines of orchards.
The meadow is dotted with a few amenities to improve comfort and increase usability: benches, posts for attaching a hammock or slackline, etc. It is a place where you can sit or lie down in the grass.
The rows of orchards run parallel to the path and then shift to create a breathing space facing the rain garden. The fruit tree varieties are selected either for the quality of their fruit, which can be harvested, or for their decorative blossoms in spring. Local and ancient species will be favored. Almond trees are also planned to continue the history that the city of Nanterre has with this tree. In total, 200 trees will be planted.
The Rain Garden
In order to increase the potential for biodiversity and the diversity of habitat types, the project plans to create a wetland area. The waterproof surface, combined with a rainwater storage system, will enable the establishment of a rich and unique flora and fauna.
Furniture, benches, and chaise longues located on the southern edges allow residents to enjoy this “inaccessible” landscape. The central passageway allows visitors to explore this natural space.
