Built in 1988 by Fernando Urquijo, Giorgio Macola, and Jean Willerval, EQHO underwent a complete renovation in 2013.
For the architects behind the renovation, B. Hubert & M. Roy, openness was the watchword for the new project. Openness of the building to light, openness to the city, openness to gardens... through ambitious architectural choices and openness to life through exemplary programming.
It was this choice of openness that dictated the design of the new building in :
- Completely restructuring the workspaces in the superstructure so that 95% of the space is available on the first day;
- Completely rethinking the layout of the premises to integrate a wide range of 5-star service and leisure facilities into a single site, including a 330-seat private auditorium, a 1,300 m² fitness area, numerous restaurants, a premium hospitality service, fully equipped bicycle storage facilities, a garden, and terraces.
Thanks to a proactive and voluntary environmental approach, EQHO has obtained numerous high-level labels and certifications: BREEAM Very Good, BREEAM In Use Excellent, NF HQE Sustainable Building Excellent, NF HQE Sustainable Management Exceptional, and Effinergie.
A word about architects
Gino Valle (1923–2003) was one of the most important figures in post-war Italian architecture. A disciple of Carlo Scarpa and Walter Gropius, he was particularly influenced by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. Mainly active in the Venice area, he teamed up with Giorgio Macola to design the courthouse in Padua and the Giudecca housing complex in Venice.
In 1985, the duo opened an agency in Paris with Fernando Urquijo, an Argentine architect known for IBM's architecture program. They led the renovation of the Edouard VII block in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. In La Défense, the team designed the Allianz Acacia building and the Sofitel La Défense. Fernando Urquijo and Giorgio Macola also participated, with Jean Willerval, in the construction of the Eqho tower for IBM.
