Jean Nouvel was born in 1945 in Fumel. He studied at the Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux and then in Paris, and opened his first firm in 1970. A prominent figure in French architecture, he advocates an approach free of any particular style, guided solely by the site, its history, and its context—a philosophy that has earned him international recognition.

His Honors

His work has been recognized with the highest international honors: the Aga Khan Award (1989, for the Arab World Institute), the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale (2000), and—in a single year (2001)—the triple distinction of the Royal Gold Medal (RIBA), the Praemium Imperiale, and the Borromini Prize. He has also been awarded an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in London (2002), the International Highrise Award for the Agbar Tower (2006), and, finally, the Pritzker Prize in 2008—the highest honor in architecture.
