Located near Pesaro Boulevard, the higher education institution specializing in internet and multimedia (Institut Léonard de Vinci) opened its doors at the start of the 2021 academic year. Designed as part of the first phase of urban renewal in the Croissant district (2015-2022), the school plays an important role in rebalancing the identity of the neighborhood.

By bringing life to Boulevard de Pesaro, the building literally “showcases” the life of the school. Indeed, the common programs have been grouped together on the ground floor and first floor to form a transparent base. This opens widely to the south towards the large fault line, which has become a large mineral piazza, and to the north onto the ramp, which has been rehabilitated into a green forecourt, connecting the two urban levels of the project. The ground floor consists of the cafeteria, the entrance hall, and workshops, and also provides access to a 170-seat auditorium.

The rhythm of the facades and floors is marked by brick and glass modules, where a regular and rigorous grid alternates with large elements of urban dialogue. The alternation of brick and glass produces a building that is both massive and transparent. Particular attention has been paid to circulation, which is as important as the spaces it serves. Running through and irrigating the school, the route reveals the diversity of spaces in terms of height, shape, and use, but also the way in which they connect, becoming a progressive journey that reveals and stimulates school life.

A word about the architect

LAN (Local Architecture Network) was founded by Benoit Jallon and Umberto Napolitano in 2002. The agency explores new territories in search of a vision that encompasses ecological, social, urban, and functional issues. The two partners of the agency were named Knights of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2018.

The agency is behind the extension of the MAXXI Museum in Rome, the transformation of the Rive de Seine tower, the Maillon theater (Équerre d'Argent 2020), and the Euravenir tower (nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Award 2015 and the Soufaché Prize from the Academy of Architecture). They also designed the experimental housing in Bègles (Venice Biennale 2016), the student residence on Rue Pajol (first prize in the national BigMat competition), and the EDF departmental archives (Leaf Awards 2011). LAN currently works in Europe (France, Belgium, Germany, and Slovenia) and is expanding internationally through projects in the Middle East and Asia.
