Rives Défense: the winner chosen to imagine the future of the neighborhood
Paris La Défense has announced the winner of the consultation on the urban transformation and public spaces project for the Rives Défense sector. The winner is a consortium led by British architecture and urban planning firm RSHP (formerly Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners). Located opposite the Seine on the historic axis, this 8-hectare site represents one of the major opportunities for transformation in the neighborhood in the coming years.
Thanks to numerous international experts, led by the RSHP agency, the 8 hectares of the Rives Défense sector will be transformed in the coming years. Several ambitions and objectives are being pursued through this urban project, which should notably strengthen the programmatic diversity of the district and promote its link with the heart of the business district.
An international team to transform Rives Défense
Following a consultation process that attracted nearly thirty bids, Paris La Défense has selected a Franco-British consortium to design the future of the Rives Défense sector. The consortium is led by RSHP Architects and Urban Planners, a British agency renowned for its large-scale urban projects. The agency will be responsible for defining an overall vision for the project and ensuring its architectural and urban coherence. The agencies, workshops, and design offices working alongside it will enable the project to be approached in all its dimensions: urban, environmental, landscape, and social.
The team brings together:
- RSHP, the lead urban planner and coordinator of the consortium;
- Atelier SOIL, the co-urban planner, specializing in urban uses and activities;
- the architecture and landscaping agency, Altitude 35;
- Arcadis, the engineering and civil engineering firm;
- Atelier Franck Boutté, an expert in environmental strategies;
- Urban Eco, an agency specializing in urban ecology and biodiversity;
- and Mobius, responsible for material reuse initiatives.
The various challenges involved in transforming the neighborhood
The transformation of this neighborhood is one of the most exciting real estate opportunities in Greater Paris. The project is therefore guided by a number of convictions and objectives.
A neighborhood facing the Seine
One of the major challenges of the project is to recreate a direct link with the Seine, which is currently largely hidden by buildings and road infrastructure. Located opposite the river and in line with Paris's historic axis, the Rives Défense site benefits from an exceptional geographical location that could be revealed. The aim of the project is therefore to turn the river into a real living space, with new public and leisure areas accessible to all. The project will also redesign certain parts of the slab to reconnect the district to the town of Courbevoie and the business district, thanks to new pedestrian and landscape continuities.
A more diverse and vibrant neighborhood
Rives Défense, like other projects in the business district, is part of a programmatic diversity initiative. The project could therefore enable:
- the development of new housing options;
- the modernization and renewal of office space in the area;
- strengthen and optimize building bases to enhance commercial and service offerings, or even rehabilitate or modernize buildings for the tertiary sector;
- develop a large-scale hotel hub to enhance the quality of hospitality for visitors to La Défense.
This could also be accompanied by the strengthening and enrichment of a unique range of services and leisure activities to make the district a real destination in Greater Paris. An iconic project could be created to embody the area and have an international impact.
The overall objective of the approach and the project is to create a lively, mixed-use district linked to the Seine and the city, taking into account the demands of local residents and users of the district.
