La Danse

Artist: Shelomo Selinger (1928)
Installation date: 1983
Techniques: Tinted reinforced concrete

Created in 1983 in cast white concrete, this work represents four figures reproduced on each of the planters used to delineate the "lower" square below the Esplanade. The originality of this work lies partly in the integration of vegetation which, over time, seems to embrace the figures in perfect symbiosis.

A word about the artist

Born in Poland in 1928, Shelomo Selinger was deported in 1941 and spent several years in a concentration camp. In 1945, left for dead, he was miraculously saved by a Soviet doctor. He remained amnesic for 7 years. Life returned to the kibbutz and the army during Israel's War of Independence. During a walk on Mount Carmel, he begins to recover his memory and his horrible memories, and discovers his talent as a sculptor. In Paris, he studied at the Beaux-Arts. His art contrasts a troubled memory with a vision filled with sensuality, love and light.
