Mur Végétal

Mur Végétal

Artist: Patrick Blanc (1953)
Installation date: 2006
Techniques: Metal, plyamide felt, plants

A mosaic of plants, grasses and flowers forming an immense natural tapestry, this green wall changes color with the seasons. Installed in 2006 on a façade of the Westfield Les Quatre Temps shopping center, it uses a network of pipes controlled by solenoid valves. This system delivers a nutrient solution containing the dissolved mineral elements required for plant growth. Plants are chosen for their ability to grow in this type of environment, and according to the light available.

This wall of lush vegetation opens up a new perception of "green", offering everyone, at any time, the chance to enjoy the richness of plants, as if in the heart of an exuberant jungle.

A word about the artist

Born in Paris in 1953, Patrick Blanc is a CNRS researcher who has been exploring tropical forests since the age of 19. His passion has made him one of the world's leading specialists in tropical plants, but he is best known for inventing a new concept in plant walls. His patented process enables him to green urban surfaces previously inaccessible to plants. His walls can be found on a number of luxury buildings in Japan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and, in Paris, on the façade of the Musée du Quai Branly.
