The Forbiddden City at the Cité de l’Histoire, June 30–September 13, 2026

From June 30 to October 1, 2026, the Cité de l'Histoire invites you to enjoy a unique immersive experience to discover the secrets of the Forbidden City in Beijing.

This summer, step through the gates of the world’s largest imperial palace with the new show *The Forbidden City: Six Centuries of Mysteries*. For 45 minutes, immerse yourself in the heart of this legendary site—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—through an experience that combines monumental projections, immersive sets, and interactive exhibits.

Designed as a true journey through time, this new experience takes you on a journey in the footsteps of three figures from different eras: the Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci, the painter Jean-Denis Attiret, and a contemporary visitor. Through their eyes, discover nearly six centuries of history and unravel the mysteries of the Forbidden City, the former residence of the emperors of China.

Throughout the tour, wooden sets inspired by traditional Chinese architecture and lanterns recreate the majestic atmosphere of Beijing’s palaces. The highlight of the visit? An immersive 360° film that takes you on a flight over the rooftops and courtyards of the Forbidden City for a spectacular exploration of this iconic site.

The experience continues in an interactive space featuring ten touchscreens, where the history of the Forbidden City is explored in parallel with that of France and Europe. It’s a unique way to discover the connections and key milestones that have shaped these two civilizations.

While you’re here, be sure to check out the Cité de l’Histoire’s permanent immersive exhibition. As you move from scene to scene, guided by actors and an audio headset, relive the defining moments that have shaped history. It’s a four-dimensional experience, open around the clock and designed for visitors of all ages.
